As many in his family will tell you, it was apparent from the start that Jim would be a singer.  He could sing every word of BJ Thomas' "Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head" at the ripe old age of two.  Jim credits his parents and their love for music as being his biggest musical influence as they introduced him to all kinds of music from the 50's, 60's and 70's, but it was also great acts like the Beatles, Jim Croce, James Taylor and Paul Simon that gave Jim a strong appreciation for music.  As a result, he began singing in school choirs at the age of eight and continued through high school.  After his high school graduation, he hooked up with his friends Rafael Zeno and Tom Fussell and formed an acoustic trio.  The trio, which remained unnamed, performed at a few parties and church events but was mostly just something to pass the time and enjoy.  For the few years that followed, Jim spent much of his time checking out the Richmond and regional music scenes.  It was during this time that Jim met Pat O'Brien.  Pat was (and still is) a very talented musician who shared the same passion for music that Jim did, and before too long, Pat was asking Jim to join him on stage for a song or two...and the (W)rest, as they say, is history.
